We are excited to be unveiling our next class! In October, we'll be focusing on photography with 1000 Words : Capture More. Here's more info on the class :
Six amazing photographers from the Studio Calico design team are here to
help you capture more of the emotion, more of the moment, and more of
the story. This class is unlike other photography classes because it
doesn't focus on the technical aspects of shooting. Instead, we'll be
giving you a glimpse into the photographic style of each of our teachers
and contributors. We'll be covering twelve different topics, ranging
from everyday moments to special occasions, and helping you to look at
photographing them in a more meaningful way.
Today, we'd like to introduce you to the six teachers behind this class. Each of them brings an amazing passion and wealth of information to the table, and they can't wait to share it with you in their lessons and in their personal feedback on your photos.
Becky Novacek : Becky Novacek lives in Fremont Nebraska with her husband Tom and faithful dog Scooter. They have 4 grown and married children, and 10 grandchildren. Becky has always had an interest in photography, first as a hobby and then as a career. Six years ago she photographed her first wedding and at that point, it was no longer just a hobby.
Currently, Becky’s photography studio is located in a loft apartment in downtown Fremont. The historical building was built in the late 1800’s and has the original brick wall and wood floors, with large windows that allow beautiful natural to flood the space. The studio is home base for meeting clients and taking studio shots, but she does primarily location shooting. Becky photographs newborns, children, families, senior high school students, engagements, weddings and select commercial projects. Her weddings have been featured on regional wedding magazine covers and articles starting in 2008.
Kelly Noel : Kelly Noel is a work-at-home Mama with two boys (ages 8 & 5) with another baby on the way. She has been active in the scrapbook community since 2004 and her love for all things photography began around the same time. She is a self-taught photographer and started her own business a few years ago. Although she adores all kinds of photography, photographing kids is her absolute favorite and the type of photo sessions she does the most. For her, nothing is more fulfilling than getting down on a child's level and getting them to give a genuine giggle and smile. Her work is bright and vivid and she loves to capture a mix of posed and candid shots for her clients. She loves how scrapbooking combines her love for pretty paper and design with her love of capturing moments on camera.
Maggie Holmes : Maggie can’t remember a time when she wasn’t interested in photography. Like scrapbooking, her love for photos was sparked long ago and has continued to grow with each little moment that she captures on film. She believes that photographs truly make a house a home and they are my preferred form of artwork. I can think of nothing better than surrounding myself with images that tell our family story.
Over the years she has learned that life is all about the little things – a loving look, a crooked smile, a touch from a tiny (or growing) hand. She believes that the meaning and fulfillment in life lies in each of these tiny fleeting moments that make up her daily life. As she observes her kids and the little things they do or say, she often wishes she could stop the time. She loves that photographs do just that – freeze time and capture a look, a moment, a feeling, that would otherwise be gone in an instant.
Maggie is a professional photographer in Arizona and also travels to Utah and California for photo shoots as well. A few years back she created two online photography workshops so that she could teach others how to capture the same meaningful and beautiful photographs that she is known for. Her students rave about how much they learn in such a short amount of time and how easy Maggie's teaching style is to understand. Marcy Penner : My love for the camera kicked into high gear once my daughter was born. I started craving to learn more and shoot better. That desire to learn more has never stopped. I devoured everything I could find online, took classes and shot everything that moved.
During the last 4 years I built up a photography business. Families, weddings, school photos... you name it. I've reduced my session load this last year to consist of friends families and the occasional grad shoot. That keeps me busy enough. Prior to that I was taking so many photos of other people that I was hardly ever getting my own family in front of the camera.
My favorite subjects have always been families. Always. But mostly my own. :) Capturing the things they do and them being them. Trying to freeze time. I love to shoot bright, clean images. Real images of real people. I tend to stay away from poses, props and forced smiles for the most part. Candid images are my favorites. They say SO much. Photos of laughter warm my heart. I've always felt you get the best photos when people are comfortable and being themselves. When you capture THEM.
Susan Weinroth : My life is my family. Next to them I love (in no particular order)…
lazy weekend days, my iphone, guacamole, Starbucks fraps, living near
the beach, scrapbooking & quilting, finding new email in my inbox,
and taking lots & lots of photos. As a scrapbooker - my camera is
naturally almost always with me. Both my professional & everyday
photo style leans towards bright and colorful (much like my scrapbooking
style!) with an emphasis on fun, but I also adore the simplicity of a
great photo converted to black & white.
When I was seventeen (and long before I had discovered my love of
photography), a tarot card reader told me that I was going to become a
photographer. Little did I know that she was SO VERY RIGHT! Over the
past almost 10 years, my love of photography has evolved into a
business. I love capturing a tiny newborn curled up just right, or a
child’s silly giggle, or the special love that a family shares.
Capturing my own kids, & having lots and lots of photos to scrapbook

Tina Aszmus : Tina has been photographing details of her everyday life
since she was a kid who won her first film camera in a poetry contest in Junior
High. Since then, her camera has been an extension of herself. She started
shooting professionally in 2010 specializing in Senior and children’s
portraits. She finds the carefree spirit of children and teens to be most
inspiring and strives to capture the true essence of their personalities. Life.Love.Paper Photography is
just that to Tina. It’s her life and love captured on paper. Whether she’s
shooting with her Canon, Polaroid or IPhone, she’s in her element and is most
happy behind the lens.
Would you like to know what these six accomplished photographers will be sharing with you?
Each of the 12 lessons will
contain four photos with information on composition, using light and how
the shot was set up, as well as insight into technical settings,
equipment and editing. Our photographers will be sharing their thoughts
on photographing the different topics, and sharing their tips and tricks
towards capturing an image that's worth 1000 Words. The lessons will be
wrapped up with a list of photo prompts on the topic, as well as a
layout showcasing one of the images. At the end of each lesson, students
will be able to submit a photo to the teacher for feedback.
Students will also have access to four bonus PDFs - these will be cheat
sheets with helpful hints for photographing in low light situations,
capturing natural expressions, color schemes for group shots and
tweaking actions.
Here's an outline of what will be covered for each photo in the class :
- general thoughts on how the photographer approaches shooting the topic.
- specific thoughts on the set up of the photo (where was the light, was it candid, did they know you were shooting, etc)
- SOOC image (in most cases) + equipment/technical info (just camera / lens / shutter speed / aperture)
- thoughts on editing - crops, actions, tweaks and why they were used
- final image
- closing thoughts on why the photo works

group of contributors - some photographers by trade, some just
