And a few thoughts on how Erin interpreted the sketches:

The card sketch was so much fun to work with! The four "homes" for products were easy to fill with embellishments and a sentiment (on the card), and it translated easily to a layout sketch. I started out with my journaling, which I adapted from a Cathy Z. digital template. I found a great photo of my son, and used various embellishments for the open spaces.

The layout sketch was a definite stretch for me. I am usually linear and "orderly", and this sketch is v-e-r-y random and scattered (a look I usually can't pull off!). But I was able to create a layout I love by reducing the size of the layout to 8x8, and working with fewer embellishments.

Wow...so many great things happening on Erin's projects! Most of all, we love that she was so inspired by both the kits & sketches, that she turned in 4 projects...thank you so much for joining us this week, Erin!! Here, Jennifer shares her thoughts on using this sketch:

I began knowing I wanted to tell the story of my daughter Emily's first steps and her journey as a beginning walker. I had several photos to choose from, but decided on two to best fit on an 8.5x11 canvas. I often crop my photos square with a white border, but left them Polaroid-style to elongate their space on the page. With just 6x6 papers in front of me, I first wanted to tackle the banner across the top in a clever way. Two uneven strips layered with a transparent tape sticker and a border sticker allowed me to re-create that look. Next, I knew I wanted to use a journaling card in the stitched pocket. I added the journaling and embellished this first (using my go-to Tiny Attacher), before adding the photos, paper layers and titles. I don't do a lot of embellishment on my pages and like to add small bits and stamped images as finishing touches.

Here are her thoughts on using this sketch:

When i see this sketch, i immediately liked the line of embellishments in the left of the page ! I think if i don’t made this sketch, i don’t have this idea alone !

Just me, i placed this in the right of my page to change and i add some details like glitter paper, wood embellishments ... I love bright colors so i use a wood background with colorful paper. The background give contrast to my layout. I ad some splashes with Mister Huey’s. I cut my titlle with my cameo : i used digital die cut of studio calico.

It's always a fun surprise to open up an email and see that our guest had time to make a project with BOTh of the sketches provided...especially when each are unique like these. Here is what Dani had to say about her process: I have to admit I'm a sucker for banners. They are cheerful, give movement to the page and make a great eye catcher. To transform the card sketch into a page, I substitute the buttons for pictures and used the ribbon and the washi tape in the Front Row kit to create my banner. Took a quick look into my flair collection and picked the ones that would go better with the kit's color combo. For the title, I used my Clover Mr. Huey and the alpha from the kit. A quick and fun page, all thanks to an amazing sketch! I would like to thank Studio Calico for the opportunity and for all the inspiration delivered, through it's designers, through this blog, through the galleries and our doorsteps. :)

It's always fun to see our members think outside the box when using a card sketch as a stepping off point for a layout...we LOVE the contrast of the circles against the chevron and bold feel of color here! Happy Sunday! We're back with two new sketches. The first is a card from Jen Jockisch's Neverland gallery - this tall skinny card has a simple graphic design. 

For the layout sketch, we have a classic grid design from Susan's Weinroth's gallery. 

This week, we asked SC user Stepahnie Bryan to make a project based on one of the sketches - she choose to take on Susan's design for her layout.

Stephanie says : 

I am a grid girl so I loved loved loved this sketch.  As soon as I saw the sketch I knew exactly what picture of my daughter I wanted to use and the color combo I was going for.  The Studio Calico Sundrifter collection was perfect for the lightness of my photo.  I wanted to add some pops of yellow to the page so I cut down a piece of yellow star transparency I had in my stash and also painted (with watercolors) a piece of card stock I had embossed with a flower image.  I added the yellow ribbon at the end to soften it up a little.  I used my Silhouette to cut the title and the Ali Edwards "Love You" box and then added little embellishments here and there to finish my page.  Thank you so much SC for inviting me to play along.  This was an awesome challenge!

Stephanie's layout has a beautiful dreamy feel thanks to the soft colors and gorgeous photo - a perfect example that grid designs don't need to feel too graphic. "I was immediately inspired by the layout sketch, I love the white space design and I knew this would be  a fun sketch use. The single element on the left side of the sketch was my inspiration for the title work, which I embellished with stitching, sequins and mists. Instead of using 2 vertical pictures, I used one small horizontal picture, this was just a better fit for my layout. I created depth and dimension by adding lots of layers and repeating the triangle clusters. I love the end result and was so very inspired that I decided to create a quick card and by quick I mean less than 10 minutes start to finish. I again used the same design pattern and the picture was replaced by the greeting. This is perfect way to use up leftovers from a layout project. I hope you will play along, these 2 sketches are so very inspiring and the possibilities are endless. Thank you Studio Calico for inviting me to play along."

So many good ideas here from Mel: adapting a sketch to the numbers of photos you have on hand, using up your scraps from the layout to make a card and even finding inspiration to make the card from the layout sketch. When I first saw the sketch, my first thought was "You gotta be kidding!"  I don't own ANY Valentine's Day papers, and I don't do girly layouts.  How in the world was I going to pull this off? Since heart paper wasn't an option, I turned to my Cameo.  I found tons of heart images.  I put quite a few of them in my cart but ultimately decided on this one.  

I recently acquired some glitter paper, and knew that it would be perfect for the heart.  I then had to find a background that the heart wouldn't be lost on.  I decided on a light woodgrain, and matted it on a darker woodgrain. I wanted to bring in more silver so the heart wouldn't be the only silver element on the page, so i used some silver washi and some silver mist which I splattered on a diagonal. I printed my pictures in wallet size in black and white, and matted them on a dark woodgrain patterned paper. Instead of using patterned paper for layering I decided to get some use out of my washi tapes, and created a base to add the matted photos to.   Even with the huge heart cut from glitter paper, I don't think the layout is girly at all.

I had so much fun using Dani's card as my inspiration this week. I decided to use diagonal strips of paper on my page, as she did on her card. Since I love adding texture to my layouts, I included the chipboard on two of my strips. This gave the page an extra pop of color, as well. Instead of the hanging star, I decided to add my photo on the bottom right hand side.  This photo of my friends, my husband and me is from the Mummer's Parade in Philadephia.  It's one of my favorites from that day, so I wanted to highlight it on the layout.  I balanced the picture with a small cluster on the top left corner. I love the printables this month, so I used the small circle for my journaling.  Using cards as design inspiration is something I love to do. I probably wouldn't have chosen to do a page with an angled feature on it, so using the sketch really pushed me creatively!

We fell in love with the mix of patterns and rows of chipboard detail on this layout, how fun that she adapted the card sketch to make this awesome layout. Thank you for sharing your work with us, Anabelle!

Here are Martha's thoughts on working with this sketch:

I was immediately drawn to the card sketch as I cannot resist clusters of embellishments, layering, and banners!  This was an easy sketch to translate from a card to a layout...I used my Cameo to cut out the circle & banner shapes from the Amy Tangerine and October Afternoon pp and layered them in the center of the page taking my cue from the sketch.  Knowing that I was going to use bright colors, I chose a b&w photo of my daughter and added a little chevron washi to pull the color up and around the picture.  I balanced out the design with a large title cut from vellum with my Cameo and finished the LO off with an arrow and hearts Cameo cut.  I love the subtle arrows on the card the sketch is based off of, so I knew I wanted to pull that element into my layout as well.

I loved working with this sketch and can definitely see myself using it again.  Now that I have so many pictures of our daughter to scrap plus I am working on Project Life this year, it is wonderful to have a prompt like this sketch to help move the creative process along when time is at a premium!

Here are some of Ingunn's thoughts on working with this sketch:

I was having a hard time picking out my favorite photos from this New Year's hike, so when I saw the card sketch, I jumped at the chance to use a whole bunch of pics on my layout. By using photos instead of embellishments as the small boxes in the design, I was able to fit three vertical and three horizontal photos all on one page! 

I moved the banner from the top to the bottom of the design so that the title would be snuggled next to my journaling. Bonus - I finally got to use one of those gorgeous glitter stickers from the Kris Kringle add-on! It works perfectly, since it brings to mind the beautiful, glittering snow that afternoon. It was also freezing out there, so the North Pole paper seemed appropriate. 

This is definitely the kind of sketch I'll use again; it's fast, simple, pretty, and perfect for an 'event'-type page where I just can't seem to pare down my photos.
