I absolutely love the Sundrifters Circles mask - the smaller interchangeable icon masks mean that there are so many ways to use it!

Hi dear SC lovers! Today, Allison and I want to challenge you to use your favorite Studio Calico masks to create a fun and unique background, for both your layouts AND Project Life!

For my layout, I decided to work on a 8.5x11" kraft background and layered my SC mask I got in the Neverland Main kit. I simply misted some First Kiss Mr Huey on top of my mask and let it dry. Then, I outlined some designs with a pencil, and hand-colored them with more First Kiss Mr Huey and a brush, that way I could get more colorful designs than by just misting.Add some embellishments and machine stitching here and there and you're good!

I love playing with Mister Huey's on Project Life cards to add a bit of dimension and texture to an otherwise plain card!

I used the Dear Lizzy die cut as a mask on 4x6 white cardstock. By spraying closer to the card you'll get more "bleeding" or run through for a messier unintentional look.

On this page I used the mini mask that came in the Neverland Card Kit (how cute is that mask and Mini Huey?!) directly onto the back of a PL card. This was sprayed at more of a distance for a lighter mist.

Masks are a fun way to add a big or small impact to your background! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

tutorial - die cut project life cards

Hi everyone! I am loving the addition of the digital store at Studio Calico and the silhouette cuts are so fun to use for Project Life. In this tutorial, I'll show you how I used some of the silhouette cuts to put together some quick and simple pre-made journaling cards. You can easily make some pre-made cards too so that you can use them whenever you want for your Project Life! Let's get started.

First off, I picked some shapes that I want to use for my PL cards. I chose the Love Banner Cut Designs (which coordinate with February's Front Row Kit) as well as the Be Brave Feather Cut Design (which coordinates with SC's new CHA lines). 

I sent the cut designs to my Silhouette and cut them out of white American Crafts cardstock. Using white cardstock makes the cuts really versatile because I can mist them any color I want. You can choose your favorite colors! For these cuts, I used Pretty Pink, Powder Blue, Pinstripe, and Overdue Mister Hueys. 

For the first pre-made card, I used SC grid paper as the 4x6 base. Then I added a strip of washi tape (from February's Matinee add-on) to the bottom. I chose two of the banner cuts and decided to angle them for a fun design. I wanted the top banner to be shorter than the bottom banner so I just trimmed the right side of the banner. After adhering them to the card, I cut off the extra bits.

The second pre-made card is a 3x4 card. I knew I wanted to create a card that would be perfect to jot down a current 'love list'. I flipped one of the banners so that it would run vertically along the card, then attached the heart banner to the top right hand corner. I used an arrow veneer (from February's Front Row scrapbook kit) to point from the 'right now' to the heart, just for emphasis. Trim off the extra pieces again once everything is adhered.

You may have noticed that I didn't mist the 'Be Brave' feather earlier on. Another way to use the silhouette cut is as a mask! I used temporary adhesive to adhere the feather to a 3x4 grid journaling card, and then I misted it with Pretty Pink Mister Huey. Careful not to over mist - it may cause the mist to bleed underneath your mask. Peel off the feather.

For this misted card, the mist bled a little on the masked feather image so I outlined the image with my white pen. Doing so helped 'clean up' the image and make it stand out more. I added a label and some wood veneer brackets to finish it off. The fun thing is that the misted feather that was used as a mask is still usable! Here, I attached it to the middle of another grid card and added sequins to create a filler card - super easy.

Here are the four cards all together. I hope this tutorial gives you some ideas on how to use SC's silhouette cuts on your Project Life cards!

If you love stamping, mists, and rainbows…I've got a fun tutorial to share with you today!  I used this same technique on my "Happy Day" layout from the Summer of '69 gallery, using the awesome chevron stamp from the Five and Dime add on.  It's very easy to do and who doesn't love pretty colors?  If you take the time to gather your supplies and get everything ready before you start, it's pretty fast too.  Let's get started!

1.  Gather your supplies:  stamp (large background stamps work well), Versamark ink pad, white embossing powder, white card stock, foam brush, and a rainbow of Mister Huey's mist colors, heat gun, water in a small bowl, some aluminum foil to use as a "tray" (or something else to hold the mist drops).


2.  Using the Versamark ink pad, stamp the image onto the white card stock. (I'm making a card in this tutorial, so I'll just be stamping my 4x6 background stamp once.  For my layout I stamped repeatedly to get a larger background.)  I've used clear embossing powder for this technique also, but really white works the best and gives a crisper resist image on white card stock.  Sprinkle the white embossing powder onto the stamped image, shake off the excess gently, and heat emboss.  You'll end up with a white on white image that's hard to see.  But that will soon change! 



3.  I like to make a little tray out of some aluminum foil to hold my mist drops.  If you fold up the edges it keeps everything contained and you get to toss it afterwards…less mess!  Open up the mist bottles and drop a few drops of each color onto the foil as shown.  You don't need much for a smaller project like a card.

4.  Now comes the fun part!  Dip your foam brush in the water to moisten it and then dip it into the first color you want to use (RED!).  Now just brush it across the stamped image.  I decided to make my rainbow go diagonally across the card, so I painted on the mist in that direction.  You want to let the color fade as you move to the next mist color in your line up, so maybe grab a little more water on your brush and swipe it across the red on your image again towards the bottom edge.  Rinse your brush and repeat with the orange, then the yellow, then green, etc until you have all the colors done.  You can go back and add a little more water in places that end up too vivid or add mist to the places that are too washed out.  Just work quickly so that it stays wet and remember to wash off your brush in between colors. 

5.  After you have all the colors finished, take a paper towel and carefully (with the towel wrapped around your index finger) wipe the mist off of the embossed image.  Rotate the towel often so that you have a clean area to wipe with.  The embossing powder will act as a resist and the mist will come off when rubbed.  Now your embossed image should show up beautifully!

6.  Trim your card stock to the desired size and embellish.  You'll notice that the colors do fade a bit as they dry.

mist + veneer tutorial

Hi everyone! I’m here today to share a fun new way to use your wood veneer…as little masks when you’re misting!

I wanted to use the cute little wood veneer people for my card, so I started by using some temporary adhesive and lining up a couple of the large wood veneer people across the patterned paper.

Then I misted with Boss Lady Mister Huey and after it dried, I took off the wood veneer. I actually misted a bit too close to the paper so it bled a little. To remedy that, I used my favorite Uniball Signo white pen to outline the people and they looked as good as new.

I always have some scraps lying around my work area, so I finished off this simple card with some stamping, Take Note scraps, and twine. Super easy right? :)

Tina's Tutorial

Hi guys! It's Tina, and I've got a quick tutorial for ya. Just a simple approach to creating some of your own personal fillers and journaling cards for your 2012 Project Life. I made several batches using neutral colors so they will be easy to incorporate with my other PL paper items and everyday ephemera.

I first gathered my supplies which included my favorite Mister Huey's, Clay, Calico White and Atmosphere. I used More Gray and More Kraft and several patterned papers from the Classic Calico Collection. I also gathered some stamps and a few embellishments.

I created some simple backgrounds using different stencils, like my favorite SC Ampersand along with the Misters.

After drying, I cut them down to size according to my own PL page protectors. I did a little stamping and added a few stickers. Now I have my own personal journaling cards ready to use!

Hey y'all! It's Stephanie here with my very first tutorial! I am so excited to share something I'm very passionate about...doilies. Yes, you heard me right. Doilies. I am doily obsessed and have a huge collection! I have paper doilies, plastic doilies, and crocheted doilies. I am always adding to my collection too. I am clearly a granny in a 34 year old's body.

Today I'm going to talk about something I love to use my doilies for...misting with Mister Huey's.

A wide selection of doilies work well as masks, and here are a few of my favorites. The plastic (aqua and cream) doilies are vintage and can be found in junk/antique type shops. The white paper doilies were found in the baking sections of grocery stores and craft supply stores.   The yellow and pink doilies were Easter themed doilies that I found at the Dollar General.

Today I want to share my favorite ways to use doilies and Mister Huey's together. It's a match made in heaven! And this is coming from a girl that not too long ago had NEVER had any desire to try misting.

I have doilies as masks on many layouts, but the most recent is my glorious layout from my field guide gallery. Field Guide is still for sale here!

I think the reason I like this layout so much is that the Calico Shine Mister Huey's on the dark cardstock is just so subtle, shimmery, and pretty.

For this layout I placed a large circular paper doily on cardstock and misted it with Calico Shine. I misted pretty freely here, not caring that there were larger splotches and uneven spots.

The final result is hard to relate in photos, but it is shimmery and elegant. There is plenty of room on the design to add photos and embellishments in the center of the doily. Voilà!

For this next misted background, I used my vintage plastic doilies and a bright white background. Please note that I placed them a bit off of the sides of the page. I chose to use the Cameo Mister Huey's here.

I decided to mist the center of the doilies a bit heavier so that they would pop more than the rest of the design.

The final result is, honestly, my favorite of the three designs I did for this tutorial. I can't wait to use it! I love the Cameo on the background. So pretty.

For this last background, take medium sized circle shaped paper doilies and cut them in half.

I chose to use Dewey Mister Huey's on a cream/light brown background. Take three of the half doilies and place them around the perimeter of the cardstock. One to the bottom left, One to the upper right, and one in the upper left corner.

I lightly misted the doilies with the Dewey mist. On this page, I decided to lightly mist the doilies only, not extending the mist to the middle of the page, except for a few splatters here and there.

The final result is soft and feminine and subtle. You could certainly mist heavier here, but I wanted a light effect.

So there you have it! Three different ways to use doilies as masks on your layouts. I honestly could have shared a million more ways, but I had to stop myself. :)
