workspace wednesday

Hi guys! So when we bought our home, there was a room in the basement that had no lights, was filled with junk, and had a huge table in it that we knew we'd never be able to get out. We shut the door and forgot about it for a while, but once I began scrapbooking we started to think about making it my craft room. We cleaned out all the junk, painted the walls, my husband installed 3 rows of 8 lights, and then I realized that that giant table was beyond perfect for me.

I love my room, but keep in mind it's in a basement. Of a 100 year old home. It's not fancy, there's cords running everywhere and the windows need replaced. But it's mine. And because of it's lack of fanciness, I can splatter mist and paint to my hearts content and no one cares. So here you go!

I keep all my papers, cardstock, adhesives and most of my supplies in these cubes. They're super handy and I don't have to search for anything. A lot of loose embellishments, bits and pieces and stickers go in some old Pyrex dishes I have. My husband hung some pegboard for me and I use that to hang unopened packages of veneers, alphas, stickers, etc. I use some fabric bins for opened packages of Thickers - it's completely overflowing and a mess but it's handy. Like I said, none of it's fancy but it works for me!

 

Insider Tips

Hi guys! Today I want to share my stream of consciousness while creating a kit layout. 

Once I'm done with any projects that need to be done with an individual kit only, I lump all the kits together. Papers together, alphas together, embellishments together, and so on. It all goes into a big jumble on my (messy) desk. 

To begin with, I choose a photo from my photo drawer. I typically print a lot of photos at once and then throw them here for future use. It saves time when I'm ready to scrapbook. 

Next I decide if I'm going to scrapbook 8.5x11 or 12x12. This is usually decided by the size of my photo; today I'm working with an Instagram photo printed at 3x3 so I'll go smaller. I cut my base card stock to size and then cut my inner sheet of card stock and lay them on top of one another. I do not adhere at this stage. Then I lay my photo on top and look at all the different patterned papers and grab whatever catches my eye. In this case, it was the Cosmo Cricket paper, mainly for the colors but upon closer look I see the text is fairly appropriate too. I trim that up to the size I want and lay it down. 

Looking at this, I know I need more color. I think maybe yellow. I find some yellow paper in my kit pile, but realize I only want  a teensy bit of it so I punch it with my AC Knockout punches and then lay it down. That works for me, so I punch another tiny strip for the other side of the page. I love the Echo Park camera paper and I know I want to use it somehow but I'm not quite sure yet. I'll just lay it down in the general are I'm thinking for now and come back to it. 

Now I'm going to add in my title. A lot of times I will move this around quite a bit before I make a decision, but this time I think I'll just leave it where I started. Also, I'm going to adhere everything I have so far because this is the base of my layout, I really just need to embellish it from here. 

So now I need to embellish. I think I want to add some of the mistable hexagon Thickers from the main kit but I'm not sure what color, so I'll try a few different colors. I definitely like the Dewey Mister Huey color best - its more subtle and just adds a little something extra - so I mist a few more and add those in. 

Add a few more embellishments - I tuck the Echo Park camera that I wanted to use underneath my photo and then realize it still needs a little something else so I wrap some Lawn Fawn cord from add-on 4 around the page and tie it off with a Prima wood button. I also add a  Heidi Swapp Color Magic number - it took a few tries to get the color right and it's a tiny detail but I think I like it. Now I need to think about my journaling - I realize I really want to just tuck it under my photo somehow so I grab one of the cards from add-on4 and slip it under the photo. Finish it off with a few jewels and some staples along the edge of the yellow trim and I think I'm done. 

Now I need to photograph my page. I thought I'd share how I photography my pages with you guys but it's messy. You've been warned. I use a piece of foam core board and just set it on top of my drawers and adhere my page. As you can see by all the dirty adhesive - I've used this a lot. :) I just photograph a bunch of shots until I'm fairly certain I have the image straight. 

Next I import my photos to my computer and crop my layout image, and I sharpen it a little and brighten it a little in Lightroom. I make sure it's sized properly, name the file - and that's it!

monthly kit spotlight

I love Aprils's main kit, City of Lights. The Jenni Bowlin Stencil Lettering Guide is an awesome piece of paper that can be used in so many different ways, and there are a lot of great patterned papers included as well. I thought the Gold Glitter Pow paper and Mister Huey's Cameo and Dewey would be great additions to this kit, so I made sure to do some cutting with my Silhouette Cameo to incorporate those items. I'm a total sucker for butterflies so I was of course smitten with the Sassafras butterfly stickers, they are a great way to add a little extra oomph to your pages. I was also able to get some more use out of my Knockout punches, as well as my Dear Lizzy Roller Date stamp.  This page really came together super quickly, and that is thanks to an awesome kit. 

Jen's Tutorial

Hi guys! It's Jen here with a super quick and easy tutorial on creating the flower I used on my 1 Year layout from this months Brooklyn Flea Gallery. 

I love to use large embellishments on my page, and this is an easy way to create your own. The fun part is that you can use whatever paper you want and embellish it any way you want for endless possibilities. 

To begin, you'll need to cut about 6 or 7 strips of 12x12 paper, more or less depending on how large you want your flower to be. I like to have varying widths, so I cut my strips anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1 inch wide. 

Next, you'll take each strip and fold the ends in to the center so that they overlap a tiny bit. Do not crease the ends, just just gently fold. Then staple or adhere it in the center. I like to staple with my Tiny Attacher just because it's a little quicker. 

Now I just layer one by one. I start by layering 2 at a right angle, staple those together. Then you just add them as you go, layering them at different intervals. Staple each one a few times just to be sure it's sturdy. Once you get to the last few strips it can be a little difficult to staple, just work with it and you'll get it. 

Finally, I punch a circle and place 2 stacked American Crafts foam adhesive circles underneath and then place in the center of my flower. I then adhere the entire piece to the page with more foam adhesive.

Journalicious Week

We thought an idea this cute needed it's own adjective. Whether you create a personalized journal, a fun notepad, or a one of a kind mini album the new Studio Calico journal kits make it fun and easy.  Not only are they versatile, they are simply adorable!

We're going to showcase the new journals here on the blog for Journalicious Week.  We've got lots of journals from the Design Team to share.  I created this one using the new woodgrain journal.

I love these new journals Studio Calico has put out. They are so perfect for just adding little bits and pieces of things, and documenting as you go. I decided to create a journal housing images of home decorating ideas that I've found on Pinterest. It's a great way to keep me inspired and keep me motivated to actually do some of these things. I love that I can add to it as I go, and there are a TON of pages in these journals so I won't run out of room anytime soon.

Hi everybody! So I was racking my brain trying to think of a challenge, and I looked at this photo of Nora and thought "Awww...she is such a pretty pink princess." And so then I decided to do a layout about it, and what better way to reinforce my title than to use pink and ONLY pink on my layout?? (I really used to hate the color pink, but after having 2 girls I've kind of had to learn to love it.)
