We got a fun email from SC member Mel Blackburn earlier this week - she had a few challenges in mind for WCMD and wondered if she could post them here at Studio Calico. We loved her ideas, and had her help us gather some more talented cardmakers from the community for a series of challenges for today!
challenge #1 : create a card based on a DT member's LO
Happy National Card Making Day!!! I am happy to share with you today a fun challenge that will surely inspire you to participate in the festivities of National Card Making Day. I challenge you to peruse the DT gallery and pick out a layout to lift, yep a layout not a card. It’s really easy to convert a layout into a card, simply select a couple of items from the layout that catches your eye and apply them to a card format. I lifted this wonderful layout by Celine Navarro.
(card by Mel Blackburn)
I love the color combo, the quote which is one of the main focus of the layout and the design of the layout. I incorporated those items onto my card. The quote was created using my new Cameo and Studio Calico file; I incorporated the blocking design of the pattern paper and kept the embellishment to a minimum, as in Celine’s layout. I hope this gets your creative mojo going. Looking forward to seeing your creations. Happy crafting!
challenge #2 : create a card in 15 minutes or less
(card by Cindy Lee)
To create this card, I used some word stickers by Cosmo Cricket and MME paper and chipboard button. I started out by punching a circle on the diagonal stripe paper and layered the embellishments around it. Then, I finished the card with some sewing and misting. Oh yeah, had to include washi tape too :) I love how I can create this card in 15 minutes.
challenge #3 : color combo challenge
My favourite fall colour combination is the deep blue sky, the orange
leaves on the maple trees with the green grass. You know what I am
thinking -that pristine fall image. So I decided to use those colours
for the basis of my card. I hope this idea gives you lots of
inspiration! Happy WCMD! (I am looking forward to seeing your takes on
my colour combination!)
(card by Sarah Webb)
(cardstock -Bazzill; pp -My Mind's Eye, Studio Calico; tag -Martha Stewart; stamps - Hero arts (sentiment), Studio Calico (spirograph); embossing powder -American Crafts; gems -Dollarama (orange), Queen & Co (blue); twine -The Twinery; punch -Fiskars)

challenge #4 : use scraps
I love making cards using scraps! After I finished a recent layout, I had several Lily Bee papers laying on my table. The backsides all have this cute chevron pattern.
(card by Annabelle O'Malley)
I thought it would be fun to create a 'chevron rainbow' with them. So, I trimmed the strips and layered them onto each other. Leftover banner stickers adhered with foam adhesive were a fun added element.
challenge #5 : use a diecut machine or punches on card
Using the Cameo is a great way to create your own sentiments because you can choose the color, font, and even your own handwriting, as I did with "love". I also used the Cameo to cut out the hearts, then backed them with pattern paper to add more color.(card by Patricia Roebuck)
Thanks for the awesome challenges and card, Mel, and thanks to Sarah, Patricia, Cindy and Annabelle for their inspiration as well! We hope you all enjoy these challenges!
To be entered to win a $5 GC to the Studio Calico Shop, just complete a card based on any of these challenges, then upload it to the Studio Calico gallery. Leave us a link to your project by October 15th in the comments here. We can't wait to see what you make!
